FIsh 'n' Chips with delicious sauce tartare

The secret behind good fish and chips

There's something special about fish and chips when it's made with fresh fish. The delicate flavour of freshly caught cod, pollack, haddock or plaice, combined with crispy beer batter and golden chips, creates an incomparable dish that's hard to resist. If you think you don't like fish but have never tried fresh fish before, then it's time to give it a try. Fish that tastes "fishy" is often a sign that it's been stored for too long - and that means you're missing out on a completely different experience. Fresh fish tastes clean and natural, and it's this freshness that makes fish and chips so special.

What fish can I use for homemade fish n' chips?

When making fish and chips at home, it's important to choose the right type of fish. The best fish for this dish are those that flake easily and provide a juicy, tender bite. Here are some of the most popular choices:

  • Cod: The classic fish for fish and chips. Cod has a mild flavor and flakes easily, making it perfect for the crispy beer batter.
  • Cool: A good, slightly firmer fish with a mild flavour. Cod holds its shape well during cooking and gives a delicious result.
  • Haddock: A slightly fattier fish with a lovely flavour. Haddock is also a popular choice in fish and chips and provides a juicy and delicious experience.
  • Plaice: This flatfish is another favorite. Plaice has a mild flavor and a lovely, delicate texture, making it perfect for a crispy breading.

Why is freshness the alpha and omega?

  • The taste: Fresh fish has a sweetness and lightness that really comes through when covered in a light beer batter. It has a natural umami that makes it both mild and yet rich, without being too "fishy".
  • The texture: When you use fresh fish, the flesh flakes perfectly when cooked, resulting in juicy, tender pieces that make the dish a mouthwatering treat – every time.
  • The small difference: Fresh fish adds a whole new dimension to fish and chips. Even the simplest dish can be transformed into a memorable taste experience.

How to get the most out of fresh fish

  • Keep it simple: Let the fish be the star of the dish. Season it lightly with salt and pepper before dipping it in the beer batter – that's how you get the best flavor.
  • Check for legs: Fresh fish may contain small bones, so be sure to remove them thoroughly for the best eating experience.
  • Serve immediately: Fish and chips should be enjoyed while hot. The crispy surface and juicy fish taste best when freshly prepared.

A classic dish with a focus on freshness

Fish and chips doesn't have to be just a dinner – it can be an experience. When you use fresh fish like cod, pollack, haddock or plaice, the dish takes on a whole new dimension, where simplicity and quality ingredients make all the difference. Serve it with lemon, a homemade tartar sauce and crispy fries, and you have a dinner that oozes both coziness and irresistible flavor.

Make it easier to make the perfect fries with a sharp chef's knife

When it comes to fish n' chips, the fish is of course the focus. However, the "chips" or French fries also play a big role. If you want them to be extra delicious and crispy, we of course recommend that you make them yourself! If you are going to make them yourself, it is important to have a good andsharp chef's knife.
