What is a mixing bowl?
A mixing bowl is a deep kitchen bowl with high sides, used for mixing, whisking, kneading and storing food. The high sides keep the ingredients in the bowl while you stir or whisk, making it suitable for everything from cake batter and whipped cream to marinades, salads and proving bread dough. Mixing bowls are also known as prep bowls or dough bowls, depending on what they are used for.
Why stainless steel is the best material for mixing bowls
Stainless steel absorbs no taste, odour or colour, and the material releases no microplastics into your food. It handles both heat and cold, which means the same bowl can be used as a bain-marie over a saucepan and for storage in the freezer. Unlike plastic, stainless steel is not stained by tomato, turmeric or fatty ingredients, and unlike glass, it can be dropped without breaking. That is why stainless steel is the standard choice in professional kitchens.
Mixing bowls with lids – one set for the whole kitchen
Our stainless steel mixing bowl set consists of five bowls of 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 litres. Each bowl has internal measuring marks, so you can measure directly in the bowl, a non-slip silicone base that keeps the bowl in place while you whisk, and a tight-fitting lid. The bowls stack inside one another and take up minimal space in the cupboard. Bowls with lids let you prepare food in the evening and put it straight in the fridge – without moving it to another container.
Which size of mixing bowl should you choose?
For whisking egg whites or a single dressing, 1.5–2 litres is plenty. For cake batter, pancake batter and a salad for four people, 2.5–3.5 litres is a good fit. For bread dough that needs to prove, or for tossing a larger salad, you need at least 4.5 litres – the dough can double in volume while it proves. If the dough is going into the oven afterwards, the bowls pair well with a baking steel or an enamelled cast iron pot.
